Eric Swartz

As president and founder of The Byline Group, Eric Swartz has 30 years of experience as a branding strategist, tagline developer, message packager, and professional business communicator. Mr. Swartz is the creator of the Brand Audit, Assessment & Analysis™ (BA3™), a strategic and operational tool for strengthening brands, messages, and competitive positions. Since 1996, he has conducted more than 100 brand audits for public and private corporations, start-ups, non-profits, and destinations.  

Mr. Swartz is also president and founder of Tagline Guru, a site devoted to sloganeering and tagline development; and Great Destinotions, which specializes in community branding and destination marketing.

Some of Mr. Swartz’s leading clients have included Adaptec, American Express, Apple, Cathay Pacific Airlines, Charles Schwab, Emory University, FedEx, French Patent Office, Hewlett Packard, Oracle, Sun Microsystems, Safeway, Tri-Valley Convention & Visitors Bureau, United Business Media, and Wells Fargo.

Prior to forming The Byline Group, Mr. Swartz served in senior marketing and communications management positions at The Thomson Corporation, Ziff Communications, GTE, and SPRINT. The recipient of an award of merit from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, Eric has been published by the Business Marketing Association, the American Marketing Association, and the International Association of Business Communicators, and has been featured in such publications as Brandweek, BusinessWeek.com, Investor’s Business Daily, The Los Angeles Times, Meetings & Conventions Magazine, MSN.com, MSNBC.com, and USA Today. 

Mr. Swartz has spoken before The Commonwealth Club of California on the subject of branding and sloganeering, and has been a guest lecturer in brand messaging at Golden Gate University.  

Eric received his B.A. in Communication & Public Policy from the University of California at Berkeley, and his M.A. in Communications from The Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, where he taught film theory and history. 

   

Mark Galarneau

Mark Galarneau serves as Creative Director at The Byline Group. He is also president of Galarneau & Sinn (G&S), an award-winning graphic design agency which he co-founded in 1982. 

Mr. Galarneau specializes in all forms of visual communication – from identity/logotypes and collateral to packaging and advertising. His clients run the gamut from B2B to consumer, and include notable organizations such as Cable & Wireless, HP Pavilion at San Jose, Polycom, Russian River Valley Winegrowers Association (RRVWA), The San Jose Sharks, SAP Open, Satori Cellars, Sega, Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment, and Symantec.  

Many of Mr. Galarneau’s well-known designs have graced downtown street banners, sides of buses, and highway billboards. The logo he created for the RRVWA can be seen at the entrance to virtually every winery in the region, and his branded sign for the Sharks, “This is Sharks Territory,” has been a favorite on storefront windows, lawn displays, and all manner of official hockey merchandise for the last five years.

Mark has been recognized with over 200 industry awards from the following organizations: The New York Art Directors Club, The Clios, The Western Art Directors Club, The San Francisco Society of Communication Arts, The Los Angeles Art Directors Club, Communication Arts (CA), The Type Directors Club, and The San Jose Advertising Club, among others. He has also been published in Typographic Design, Vol. 1 and 2 by David Brier; Great Type and Lettering Designs by David Brier; PRINT Casebooks 9 - The Best in Packaging; PRINT's Best Logos & Symbols; and HOW Magazine. 

Mark graduated from San Jose State University with a B.S. in Graphic Design and has collaborated with Eric Swartz on hundreds of projects over the last two decades.
